Thanks for submitting the request. I'm rewording the summary because the second part of what you ask for is a duplicate. See bug #8.
As for the first part (updating ID3 tags with information from Amazon), yes it would be possible to send some info back to the track. At present Synergy only cares about the cover art and ignores all the rest, but there often is more information available which could be used.
There are two small problems to bear in mind:
1. The quality of the Amazon search results depends on the quality of your ID3 tag information. If you have poorly tagged tracks, then you might end up getting the wrong art. In this case "updating" the song ID3 tags would be the exact opposite of what you want. Paradoxically, the more accurate your ID3 tags, the more confident you can be of the search accuracy, but the less likely it is that there'll be any information available from Amazon which isn't in the tags already.
2. The most logical time for populating ID3 tags is at the moment when you rip the CD (using CDDB/ Gracenote). This is when you have the most information available to make accurate decisions. Most tracks should come from ripped CDs or downloaded from the iTMS, and so you should have good tags. If you're legally downloading MP3s from artists who distribute them in that manner, then hopefully those artists have the good sense to make sure the ID3 tags are right before distributing. So what kinds of tracks are left after eliminating rips, iTMS tracks, and legal downloads? For these remaining tracks you're back at problem "1" again above.
I've got to be honest and admit that bearing these two factors in mind I don't see much use for the proposed feature, so for me implementing it is a fairly low priority. Needless to say, if enough people want this and vote for this bug, I'll do my best to implement it anyway. It most certainly couldn't be automated due to the likelihood of inaccuracy. If it's a manual thing then perhaps a better tool for the job might be MP3Rage, which is made for just this kind of thing. Any other ideas?
