Description

From a user email:

"First, I ran the uninstaller, in order to uninstall the previous version.

Then, ran the installer.

When I clicked the Terminal Shell Script 'ActivateWinSwitch.command', the Terminal window reported a failure (unfortunately I couldn't find anything in WinSwitch.helper log). I could only guess that the problem was with the presence in the Menubar of an icon pertaining to Processor.prefPane.

This is a Preference Pane installed by Developers CHUD. This Preference Pane has an option to place its icon on the MenuBar. The moment I disabled this option, which took the icon out of the MenuBar, and re-launched the Shell Script, everything went smoothly. I repeated the same operation for other users of the computer."

From my reply to the user:

It would be interesting to see that actual text of the error. Did it actually work? Not all errors are fatal, sometimes the system complains but the operation ends up having the desired effect anyway.

If this is a known, reproducible conflict with the Processor.prefPane Menu Extra then there's probably nothing I can do to work-around it (other than suppressing the error message so that the user doesn't get alarmed).

I do have access to that preference pane, in any case, so I'll see if I can reproduce the error here locally.

This may be a duplicate of bug #161.

I'm marking all WinSwitch issues closed seeing as I personally no longer use it, and in fact haven't for around 4 years now.

WinSwitch addressed a real problem with the initial implementation of Fast User Switching in Panther (released October 2003), namely, the excessive screen real estate that it chewed up. Apple fixed that problem in Tiger, if I recall correctly, which came out in April 2005 (or if I'm wrong about it being Tiger, then it was definitely fixed by the time Leopard came out, in October 2007).

With this change, most of the justification for WinSwitch's existence went away, at least for me. So that's why I'm going to close all these tickets: I can't really support something that I don't use myself.

But it's open source, so if any one wants to tackle any of these issues and submit patches, I'll be happy to accept them.
