This happens for me as well! I had my iMac G5 running all day just fine, but sure enough, about 30-40 minutes after enabling synergy I received a kernel panic. Has happened multiple times over the past two days and I narrowed it down to Synergy as well just before coming here to see if anyone else was experiencing such a thing.
1.6 GHz iMac G5; 1.25GB RAM; 10.4.1

I updated both synergy to 1.9 and tiger to 10.4.1 and rebooted. I was getting kernel panics every
30-40
minutes, regardless of what I was doing on my comp. Even when no music was playing and my
computer
was idle. 30-40 minutes and boom. After hours of enabling/disabling various system components, I narrowed it down, to my huge disappointment, to synergy. If it's not running, no kernel panics occur.
I
don't have a 1.8 installer anymore, so I can't test it. Thanks.

A normal user process running without elevated privileges shouldn't provoke a kernel panic (in fact, even one running with root privileges shouldn't). Kernel panics should only happen if there's a bug in the kernel, or if something loaded into the kernel's memory space (like a device driver or kernel module). It simply shouldn't happen on Mac OS X because it has protected memory. I can't think of any way Synergy could cause this.
In this article there are some general trouble-shooting tips (see the "troubleshooting" heading) things like ruling out preferences corruption etc:

But I don't think any of these would have much to do with a kernel panic.

HOWEVER, one thing that pointed me to synergy right away, is when I noticed that the Synergy menubar extra was gone after a kernel panic happened (it was on the whole time). No other logs, nothing suspicious in the process viewer, either. All other menu extras were intact, and the Synergy crash log is empty. I disabled synergy (just quit from menu) and here I am, without a crash for almost 14 hours.

For what it's worth I just had my first Tiger kernel panic. Wasn't running Synergy (or Synergy Advance) at the time. Machine had been up for a few days, I think. Right-clicked on some files in the Finder and was looking at the contextual menu when boom...

Yea, tiger is a bit crash-happy. But why every 30-40 minutes with synergy running? I wonder what we have in common with Kylan. I wanted to try synergy advance, but I don't like growl and its way of displaying notifications very much. Very annoying when you skip through tracks :\ If synergy advance will have that cool customizeable notification window someday like synergy classic does, I'd give it a shot. I should probably leave synergy advance on for like an hour to see what happens..Yea, I'm gonna do that now, and get back to you.

Yes, Synergy Advance will have its own Floater. The Growl support is already in place for those that like it (personally, I don't have Growl installed); in one of the forthcoming public preview releases I'll be adding the Floater module.

Hey, guys. I've been able to let my machine run for 2 days now without Synergy running and haven't experienced any panics. I've been using my computer fairly strenuously as well -- safari, adium, colloquy, growl, sticky windows, itunes, transmit, bbedit, and photoshop all at the same time with no problems. It just seems as though it's got to be a Synergy issue, but what the exact cause is I don't know :(

Seeing as this seems to be something that didn't happen prior to 1.9 + 10.4/10.4.1 it might be a good idea to deactivate it until we know what the cause is. The fact that both of you say that it runs ok for a short while and then you see problems makes me wonder if there's something underlying that happens periodically at regular intervals that triggers it (for example, the new version check).
I was reading a pirate forum the other day and I did see people complaining of instability problems (although not kernel panics) when running cracked or patched versions of Synergy. I presume that both of you downloaded the app from the official site and aren't using a version that someone passed on to you (I wouldn't install it from any other source even if that source is a friend; you don't know where the friend got it from). It's always important to download from wincent.dev (or if downloading from a mirror check the checksum) to make sure you haven't gotten something infected with malware. I'd do a scan with a virus scanner. Of course, the information on those forums is not very reliable because one person says it works for them and then another comes along and says it doesn't.

I'm almost positive that you can remove the pirated version factor from the problem. I am using 1.9 downloaded for your download page and am using a valid key (my email here is the same one I purchased my license with). Hope this helps :)

I am not using a patched version of any kind, either. Downloaded straight from wincent.dev, and no patches. Version check is out of the question as well, as it started happening to me when I had no inet connection at all. And continued to happen when my ISP finally fixed the VPN connection. Although, the version check daemon was probably launching at regular intervals nevertheless.. Hmm.. you say it's new? Could you make a build with it being completely disabled or point to an earlier version? (1.8, for instance)? For testing purposes?

Just one more thing I should note: I have completely uninstalled Synergy, deleted the plist file, and reinstalled and re-entered my key. Before running it again I went to the plist file and set "Automatic Internet version checking interval" to 0 -- which I guess switched to 86400.000000 (infinity/never?) after I started Synergy. I've had it running with iTunes playing muted in the background for a little over two hours now and no panics as of yet. I'll keep you guys posted when/if it does happen.

Yep that's correct. Setting the checking interval to 0 turns checking off. This is mentioned here:

You can also set the value fairly easily by using the "defaults" command in the Terminal.
On the subject of legit downloads, its important to note that when you hit the download link you get randomly redirected to one of about 15 possible mirror sites. I personally upload the file to those sites and I then download the file and check the checksum to make sure that there are no problems or corruption (ie. that the uploaded/download file is a perfect bit-for-bit copy of the one that I prepared here). Despite the fact that I do this checking, it's always a good idea to check it yourself too. On the downloads page there is a checksum which you can compare against the version you downloaded; they should be a perfect match.

If you do find a discrepancy it doesn't necessarily mean foul play. For example, Apple introduced a feature called "Internet enabled disk images" a while back. When you mount those images for the first time they actually get modified by the OS, which changes the checksum! So if you perform a checksum before and after mounting you will get two different results. As a result if you want to check the integrity of your download you should always do it immediately after downloading and before mounting the disk image.
Now, I am probably erring on the side of paranoia when I advise people to check the checksum on the downloaded file, but as the developer I probably have to be that way. Since Synergy first came out a few years ago I've never had a problem with a mirror delivering corrupt or modified files. I've only brought it up here because the kernel panics issue is a bit baffling for me and I don't know what could cause it.

Thanks a lot, Wincent and Kylan. Did exactly as you said - uninstalled, deleted plist, set interval to 0 - works now! At first I just set the interval to 0 (was 86400.000000), but it kept resetting back to 86400.000000, and was panicing. Now it stays at 0 and doesn't crash! Not sure if that's part of the problem, but it works now. Heh, most amusing. Thanks!

Another day, another kernel panic. This time double-clicking a file in the Finder and again neither Synergy nor Synergy Advance were running at the time. This lends support to my suspicion that there are some problems with Tiger that haven't been resolved yet. Interestingly this one was such a bad panic that the system didn't even present me with the "report" window on rebooting like it had done on previous occasions.
This is taking me back to the "good old days" of Mac OS 7, 8 and 9. I thought my daily backup scheme was bordering on the obsessive, but perhaps I'll have to up it to twice a day...

Heh. My machine has been up for 33 hours and not a single panic so far. Synergy is running for about 24 or so. Maybe you should consider clean-install. That helps sometimes. If you have the time to spare, that is. I'm planning on doing that as well soon, as a lot of the unix stuff is behaving really bad.
