And as long as it's on the front page, also visible in the #index action (currently still on the front page).

    Note that on the index the slowdown is only visible when the highlighted section is on the screen. Scroll up above it and the browser is responsive. Scroll down and it turns to treacle.

    Smooth as silk in Firefox, degrades horribly in Safari. So looks like a Safari bug. Will mark as closed.

    Google Chrome (which also uses WebKit, like Safari) is also a bit sluggish, but nowhere near as slow as Safari.
