Thinking about this more, I don't need to worry about this if I just follow through with ticket #734 ("Replace confirm-then-delete pattern with delete-then-undo").
Once implemented, a user without JavaScript active can just delete without confirmation, and always have the option of clicking "undo" afterwards or otherwise recovering the deleted item (via the admin interface). As noted in that ticket, this is a nicer workflow anyway for things like deleting many spam comments in a row.
